TODDLER TICKLER
“Naughty Tag-Team”
One day while I was running errands, I
left my children in the car with a friend of
mine. Apparently my 4-year-old was being quite obnoxious when suddenly she quit and said to her 2-year-old sister: “I’m tired of being naughty. It’s your turn now.”                                    Teri Gasser, Madison, Wis.

Pastor John’s Notes:

I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. – Jesus, Matthew 10:16

Jesus sends out the Twelve for the first time with those sobering words.  We go out into the world bearing the Word of Life, but in its brokenness, the world is not ready to hear this word.  Part of our mission is to remember our own brokenness; how Christ has saved us and is continuing to heal us.  We can relate to others because we’ve been there, and we can point them onward to Jesus, because he’s brought us out.

Part of being shrewd, like Jesus says, is not buying into the simplistic, either/or, black and white narrative of the world around us.  It seems that our national conversation has become increasingly polarized, making every issue into “us versus them.”  Making anyone who disagrees into the enemy.  Most issues are complicated and it takes time and hard work to understand what’s going on and what’s at stake.

Inside the church, we too have our pet projects and things we think are important.  Our challenge lies in listening and understanding the points and perspectives of those who disagree with us.  We can learn from people even if we don’t agree with them.  We can also be very intentional about remembering our opponents too are the beloved children of God.

This is hard work.  It’s much easier to just talk with people who agree with us.  The trouble is that it is too easy to move from disagreeing with what someone thinks to discounting them as a person.

God has made a wonderfully rich and complicated creation.  We made us as a complicated and diverse bunch of people.  Let’s listen to our brothers and sisters.  We may not agree with each other all the time, but hopefully we can learn from the ways God has spoken to and through them.

Peace, John

WHY DOESN’T GOD ANSWER?
The preacher’s 5 year-old daughter noticed that her preacher father always paused and bowed his head for a moment before starting his sermon. One day she asked him why.
“Well, Honey,” he began, proud that his daughter was so observant of his mesages, “I’m asking the Lord to help me to preach a good sermon.”
“Well then, how come He doesn’t do it?” she asked.

Unto no duty are we more dull and untoward, than to the praise of God, and thanksgiving unto him; neither is there any duty where unto there is more need that we should be stirred up.  ~           David Dickson (Dick), Scottish Theologian

Going To Heaven~
By Ron Boatwright
Our number one priority in this life must be to go to Heaven.  Nothing else is as important.  Jesus says in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”  Our soul is the most precious thing we have.  There is nothing that can equal its value.  We read in Matthew 16:26, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?  Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”  One certainly does not profit in the tragic loss of his soul.
It is easy in today’s materialistic society to get caught up in the pursuit of materialism if we are not careful.  Our Lord says in Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.  But lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is there will your heart be also.”  Our bank account needs to be in heaven.
Everyday we need to tell ourselves that the main thing in this life is to go to Heaven.  We read in Colossians 3:2, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”  We should regularly think about going to Heaven.
Heaven is a prepared place (John 14:2-3) for a prepared people.  It will be such a wonderful place, which is beyond our wildest dreams.  Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:9, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”  There is no way that Heaven can be described so we as mortal human beings can understand how wonderful it will be.
A person will not accidentally go to Heaven.  Going to Heaven is a lifelong race as we read in Hebrews 12:1, “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”  Going to Heaven requires endurance, patience, and persistence.  We must finish the race.

Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol

him with music and song.  For the LORD is the

great God, the great King above all gods.

Psalm 95:2-3
